  Back to Mort's Island
  Meet Chris Lees

I BEEN DRAWING CARTOONS AS LONG AS I CAN REMEMBER. I STILL HAVE CARTOONS FROM GRADE SCHOOL. “HAPPY PAPPY AND JIM,” “SLEEPY ED AND CAT” AND “SUPER RACCOON” WERE THE NAMES OF MY EARLY ATTEMPTS OF CREATING MY OWN COMIC STRIPS.

IN JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL I CREATED MY OWN VERSION OF SUPERHEROES BECAUSE I GREW UP READING COMIC BOOKS. I CALLED THEM “SUPERJERKS,” I MADE UP MY OWN COMIC BOOK WITH THEM. IN HIGH SCHOOL, I EVEN VISITED THE DC COMICS HEADQUARTERS IN NEW YORK CITY (I WAS ON A CHOIR FIELD TRIP) AND DROPPED OFF A SUBMISSION.

WITH A REJECTION LETTER SENT BACK FROM DC COMICS, I TURNED TO COMIC STRIPS AND GAG CARTOONS ONLY. IN COLLEGE, I STARTED OUT AS AN ART MAJOR FOR MY FRESHMAN YEAR. I FOUND I WAS ONLY INTERESTED IN CARTOONING AND NOT OTHER ART FORMS. I SWITCHED MAJORS AND CARTOONING BECAME A SERIOUS HOBBY FOR ME.

I TRIED TO GET A COMIC STRIP INTO A COLLEGE PAPER, BUT WAS UNSUCCESSFUL. MOST OF THE STRIPS IN THE COLLEGE PAPERS WERE MADE VERY CRUDELY AND HAD A COLLEGE SUBJECT MATTER THAT WERE OFTEN VULGAR, LEWD AND ALCOHOL THEMED. I DIDN’T WANT TO WRITE AND DRAW MY CHARACTERS THAT WAY, SO THE EDITORS DIDN’T CHOOSE MY STRIPS. I DID MANAGE TO GET ONE CARTOON PUBLISHED IN A COLLEGE NEWSPAPER. IT WAS FOR A SPRING BREAK EDITION WHERE I HAD A COW ON A SURF BOARD.

SINCE GRADUATING COLLEGE, I’VE MOSTLY MADE CARTOONS FOR MYSELF, OR FOR FAMILY AND FRIENDS. I HAVE SUBMITTED SOME GAG CARTOONS TO VARIOUS MAGAZINES, BUT WITHOUT SUCCESS. I HAVE WORKED ON CREATING A COMIC STRIP AROUND MY TWO PENGUINS. “MORT’S ISLAND” IS THE LATEST VERSION TO FEATURE THEM.
