  Meet Terry Wilson

Cartooning was an interest of mine long before it was considered for a profession. Between kindergarten and first grade collecting cartoon character serial boxes was a budding hobby. I read MAD, Cracked, and CARtoons. By the first grade MARVEL comics and DC had entered. Dinosaurs ruled, but comics were moving up. After 5 years my Dad relented and allowed me to start collecting. So. Cal was having its golden age with custom cars, Rat Fink, and skateboarding. I was a collector of Mickie Thompson, and other auto racers. Watched surfing and skateboarded. Kept winning art awards but not interested in cartooning as a job. Art has not always been easy. Many considered me more a threat than a comrade and buried a few knives in my back. Persistence and meeting some pioneers of cartooning (most now gone) was inspiring: Charles Schulz, Hank Ketchum, Jack Kirby, Burne Hogarth, Don Rico. Before them were the illustrators like Christy, Flagg, Parrish, Wanda Gag, and so many others. The medium of cartooning is still very fertile. Some of most topical and best come from other countries. Conservative and paranormal cartoons are unusual, but this has been a deep well for me. Being raised around counter culture post-beatnicks, proto-hippies, and almost revolutionaries gave me an early awareness of the "system" that has not totally removed its influence. Laughter is great for cartoons; so are the watchmen or which I am one. The medium is essentially without limits and the hope is that it will remain viable in the USA and elsewhere.
